Do you remember committee meetings, gatherings of your working group or discussion rounds that felt really surreal and you were not completely sure what was going on? Even with the best preparation you will not achieve your goals if you and the other people present are – consciously or unconsciously – following different rules.

The first aim of the workshop was to understand the organization you are working in and the games and rules which are holding it together by shedding light on four basic elements of organizations: power, strategy, game and environment. The second aim was to develop strategies to get into the game successfully by understanding your own way of playing the game in the past and developing and practicing alternative approaches for the future.

Participants of the workshop practiced to:

  • understand organizations and power networks in organizations
  • differentiate between fair play and unfair games
  • develop a system to deal with specific situations and to analyze the games played in organizations
  • analyze the situations they are involved in
  • explore their "play-biography" and discover personal strategic resources
  • think about a gender-bias of choosing a game and the styles to play it
  • develop and test their own coping strategies

The workshop was based on theoretical inputs as well as practical self-assessment, group-work, case-analysis, work on personal situations and discussions in the plenum.

The workshop was led by Zita Küng (EQuality, Zürich)

Workshop for Participants of the SFB 754 Summer School 2014

Duration and date: August 27th 2014, half-day workshop integrated in the summer school programme
Place: Lotseninsel Schleimünde

Content:
The past two decades have seen an increasing awareness for gender issues and the implementation of various measures to counter inequality. But has gender equality been achieved? Which role does gender play in our everyday lives and how is it connected to other forms of "difference"? The central aim of the workshop is to reflect on the relevance of gender and diversity in a scientific working environment. As a starting point, a basic understanding of gender will be imparted. Participants will think about the connection of gender and science in general and the importance of gender in their particular scientific communities. This includes the recognition and critical reflection of typical gender-related stereotypes and to relate them to other personal characteristics like age or ethnicity. Furthermore, the participants will get the opportunity to develop strategies for gender sensitive behaviour regarding the daily routines of their working groups.

The training starts here to reflect the topics Gender, Stereotypes and ways of communication. The training opens the window for social appreciation of gender sensitive ways of communication in academic structures and offers strategies to new forms of collegial and professional interactions. (
