SUBPROJECT - A6
Centennial to millennial scale climate change and low-latitude oxygen minimum conditions
This subproject investigated how rapid changes in upper-ocean stratification and circulation were linked to tropical ocean low oxygen conditions during the last 20,000 years. Sediment core investigations provided an archive for physical oceanographic variability at centennial to millennial time scales that drove past changes in the low-oxygen conditions. The comparison of such natural variability in hydrographic and biochemical conditions with recent changes in tropical low-oxygen zones enabled to determine human- induced 'global-change' perturbations that may be underway already.
