SUBPROJECT - B6

Nitrogen fluxes across the benthic boundary layer under varying redox conditions

Subproject B6 investigated speciation and in situ magnitude of nitrogen fluxes (N2, NO3-, NO2-, NH4+) across the sediment-water interface of the continental margins underlying oxygen minimum zones. B6 further studied the effect of variable bottom water oxygen levels ("thresholds") on these fluxes and speciation using deliberate in situ experiments. This was achieved by using state-of-the-art lander technology in the Peruvian/Chilean upwelling area and in the Atlantic off the Cape Verde Islands.
