Reconstruction of past oxygenation and redox conditions

 

This project aims at the reconstruction of past oxygen and nitrate levels in bottom waters under the Peruvian coastal upwelling cell during the past 20,000 years. The goal is achieved by the application of micropaleontological, trace element and traditional as well as non-traditional isotope proxies for redox conditions in bottom and pore waters of the sediments. As suitable archives a set of well preserved sediment cores from the Peruvian shelf and slope are available from R/V Meteor cruises M77/1/2. The deliverables are time resolved latitudinal versus depth charts of bottom-water oxygen and nitrate along of parts of the western South American Margin.
