SUBPROJECT - B2
Photoautotrophic responses to changes in nutrient stoichiometry
Nitrogen loss in OMZs through denitrification and anammox shifts nutrient stoichiometry to lower than Redfield proportions (N:P<16:1). The response of the autotrophic community to non-Redfield stoichiometry in terms of (1) N-replenishment through N2-fixation, (2) primary production with lower than Redfield N:P, and (3) diversion of P into dissolved organic phosphoru are investigated in bioassay experiments and field surveys. Modelling studies build on these observations to examine links among nutrient stoichiometry, plankton production, N2-fixation, and DOM dynamics with 0-dimensional models and their implementation into local (1D) and global (3D) frameworks.
