Biogeochemical cycling of iron and phosphate under low oxygen conditions
The central goal of this subproject is to investigate the effect of bottom water oxygenation on the distribution of iron, phosphorus, and other redox-sensitive elements in sediments below oxygen minimum zones. Specifically, budgets of sedimentary sinks and sources of iron and phosphorus are calculated for the major working area off central Peru and potential feedbacks of enhanced benthic remobilization of these elements on primary production in the surface ocean are evaluated.
