SUBPROJECT - B6
Nitrogen turnover and fluxes across the benthic boundary layer under varying redox conditions
Subproject B6 in cooperation with A8 determines the variability of benthic nutrient release and quantify their fluxes across the benthic boundary layer into the stratified ocean interior in response to the hydrodynamic forcing and regional differences in bottom water levels of O2, NO3-, and NO2-. The second major aim of B6 is the identification and quantification of processes that play a major role in benthic nitrogen cycling under different redox-conditions with particular focus on biological N2-fixation. Investigations of B6 are conducted at locations within and outside the Peruvian and Mauretanian oxygen minimum zones.
